Cleat

Cleat

Cleats are the hardware that boats are equipped with. They are used to immobilize various types of ropes, mainly moorings. They used to be made of wood, nowadays of steel, aluminum or plastic. The advantage of the cleat is the ability to quickly and efficiently immobilize or release the rope, and its method of attachment ensures the transmission of heavy loads.

What should you keep in mind when using a cleat?

  • It is important that the cleats are adapted to the load and diameter of the rope. An improperly adjusted cleat may cause the rope to slip or make it difficult to uncoat.
  • The ropes on the cleat are tied by means of a cleat knot, knowledge of which is one of the basic sailing skills.
